Gr. 3/4 update, May 14, 2012

Hope you all had a beautiful weekend!

We are now down to the last two of weeks of class. Summer is around the corner! This week, third & fourth graders will be working on the Exhibition projects and practicing their group presentations.

The 3rd grade students have been busy checking our trash items to see which ones break down best.  We’re creating our group posters this week. Grade 4 students are to bring in their daily weather data Tuesday.  We’ll work in our meteorological teams to use those results and make our weather forecasts.  Gr. 3 & 4 students will need their colors, rulers, and scissors during class times.

Exhibition Day is next Thursday, May 24th.  Please bring your 3rd Grader to school at 9:00 a.m. as usual.  Please bring 4th Graders at 9:30 a.m. so we can prepare for the event.  The exhibition will start in the auditorium at 10:00 a.m.

At 11:15 a.m., there will be pizza for everyone.  You’ll need to bring drinks for yourself and your family (no sodas).  If you would like to bring veggies & dip or fruit & cookies to share, it would be much appreciated.

Third & Fourth Grade students also bring in their 4th Quarter portfolios this Tuesday. Unless you’ve already been emailed otherwise, please include 2-3 samples from April-May in each of the 6 OLS courses (Math, Literature, Composition, Grammar, Vocabulary, & Spelling) along with the assessments.  All pieces should have name/date.

For parents who would like to have an end of the year conference, we can meet on Tuesday, May 29th or Thursday May 31st. Please call, email, or see me if you are interested.

Let me know if your student will work on K12 over the summer to reach 100%.  After July 15th, Ms. Leslie will order new curriculum for those 3rd & 4th graders at 80% and above.  Returning students will be able to start the 2012-2013 OLS on Aug. 1st.

Coming up:

  • May 15: 4th Quarter Portfolio due in class
  • May 24: Exhibition Day & Pizza Party--last face-to-face for Gr. 3 & 4; 11:15 a.m. dismissal for BOTH
  • June 6: End of Year Potluck Picnic at Giggle Hill (Haiku),  11 a.m. – 1 p.m. *time change

Here's to the days where the sand is your seat, the waves kiss your feet, and your friends outnumber the stars!

Gr. 3/4 update May 6, 2012

Aloha to all!

We are 6 classes away from the end of the school year! Congratulations on all your hard work; you've made fantastic progress this year in so many areas!  It's amazing to think of those students that began at KCS as 5-year-olds and soon will be 5th graders!

This coming week, third & fourth graders have the Spring reading assessments to show growth in comprehension and fluency.  We are also busy with the Exhibition Day projects on ecology and meteorology.  Grade 4 students are recording daily weather data to bring in next Tuesday.  In addition, the 2nd & 3rd graders have been learning a HipHop dance routine!

Please note that all Gr. 3/4 students will be drawing this week and need their colors, rulers, and scissors available in the backpacks.

During the weeks of May 27th and June 3rd, your child needs to surpass the end of 4th Quarter goal of 80% in all k12 courses.  On Wednesday, June 6th, our Virtual/Hybrid Potluck Picnic will be at Giggle Hill Park in Haiku from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Gr. 3/4 update Apr. 30, 2012

Aloha!

This week in Grade 3 we will write about and draw animals in various habitats.  Also this week, third & fourth graders will take our Spring writing and math assessments.  Fourth graders will begin to build their weather tools.  Please send the needed materials on Tuesday:

--for a Barometer:  empty small-size coffee can & empty half-gallon carton

--for a Rain gauge:  clear quart jar

--for a Wind vane:  compass & empty soup can

The weather instrument your fourth grader builds will pretty much depend on what materials he/she can bring from home.  Any extra cans, cartons, jars or even compasses (those will be returned to you) would be great to have!

This Friday, two of our Grade 4 classmates will receive their Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry Contest awards!  Our two winning students and their families will attend the awards ceremony in the early afternoon.  Winners recite their poems and receive certificates of honor. Mayor Alan Arakawa has been invited to present the Maui Grand Prize!

Upcoming KCS Dates:

  • May 1:  OLS progress at 70% or better
  • May 4:  HSAs for those students in Round 3
  • May 13:  Mother's Day
  • May 15:  4th Quarter Portfolio due in class

Gr. 3/4 update Apr. 23, 2012

  Aloha!

This is the last week of April already, our KCS Spirit Week.  We're all set to blast through the last 10 face-to-face classes!  Remember to practice those multiplication tables; we'll check them this week.  Students are also working to get beyond 70% at home in the K12 OLS program.

This Tuesday is Career Day.  Students come to class dressed as the profession of their choice.  It will be fun to see all the "professionals" working at KCS!  Thursday is Pajama Day.  We'll spend classtime in our PJs, so be sure to also bring a favorite book and a blanket.

Third graders are showing that they know how to multiply 3-digit numbers this week, so next week we'll start division work.  We'll finish up our astronomy activity on the planets and begin our ecology project.  For Thursday, each student will need a 2-Liter soda pop bottle or Gallon milk container (empty) to help us learn about recycling & biodegradability.

Fourth graders will present their bedroom designs on Tuesday.  They should be prepared to tell how their layout is attractive and creative.  Continuing our meteorological adventures, we'll discuss how to build some of the tools used in weather stations and do an experiment that demonstrates high and low pressure.

Here's a weather game to try:  http://eclassroom.110mb.com/Games/weather .  It's called Hoop Shoot; it's a multiple choice game all about the weather.

A reminder of KCS Dates:

  • April 24:  Career Day--come to class dressed as the profession of your choice
  • April 26:  Pajama Day--come to class dressed in your jammies and bring a book & a blanket
  • May 1:  OLS progress at 70% or better
  • May 4:  HSAs for those students in Round 3
  • May 13:  Mother's Day
  • May 15:  4th Quarter Portfolio due in class
  • May 23:  OLS progress at 80% or better
  • May 24:  Exhibition Day & Pizza Party--last face-to-face for Gr. 3 & 4; 11:15 a.m. dismissal for BOTH
  • June 6:  End of Year Picnic at Giggle Hill (Haiku), 10 a.m. - 12 noon
